Amy Winehouse tribute at the 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards was led by Tony Bennett, Russell Brand and Bruno Mars. First, it was Brand who took the mic to remember the late singer. “She was a mate of mine and tragically this year we lost her,” he said.

Tony Bennett to Release Winehouse Single for Charity

tony bennettAmy Winehouse tragically passed away last month at the young age of 27. At the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, her friend Russell Brand was on hand to introduce the tribute to Amy.

Brand says of Winehouse, “First time I met her, she was kind of a daft, dopey person just wandering around. A little bit crazy … the first time, though, I heard Amy Winehouse sing, I thought … what is this incredible sound, like this timeless sound … the kind of voice Billie Holiday sung with, the kind of voice Elle Fitzgerald sung with. And I turn into the arena and I see Amy Winehouse singing.”

Chris Chase: Arian Foster Is History’s Greatest Monster

Arian Foster left Saturday evening’s preseason contest with the 49ers after tweaking his hamstring late in the first quarter. Earlier in the preseason, Foster missed eleven days of camp with a similar injury. If the injury is in fact similar, that would get him back in time for the Texans regular season opener versus the Indianapolis Colts.

As Hurricane Irene travels northward, leaving the major cities of New York and Washington in better shape than anticipated, new dangers are arising for the remote and rural portions of upstate New York and Vermont, where massive flooding has already devastated several small communities.

Throughout upstate New York’s Catskill Mountains, several small towns have been completely submerged by floodwaters, which have roared down the region’s many rivers and streams.

MTA Restores Limited Bus Service – New York News

NEW YORK — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says residents who had been ordered out of their homes in low-lying areas will be allowed to return Sunday afternoon. “The worst is over,” the mayor said, “and we will soon move to restore and return mode.”

Bloomberg says the evacuation order put in place for Hurricane Irene will be lifted as of 3 p.m. He had ordered more than 370,000 people out of those areas. They were mostly in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. He said that 9,000 people were evacuated into evacuation centers.

Turner Classic Movies is wrapping up its annual Summer Under the Stars festival, which showcases a different performer each day in August.

Linda Darnell is the honoree today, and her best film, “A Letter to Three Wives,” screens at 8 tonight. Anne Francis, who died in January, will be saluted Monday with “Blackboard Jungle” at 8 p.m. and “Forbidden Planet” at 10.

Dyanmic Howard Keel gets the TCM treatment Tuesday, when “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” airs at 9:30 p.m. and “Kiss Me Kate” follows at 11:30. The festival ends with Marlene Dietrich on Wednesday, when ”The Scarlet Empress” airs at 8 p.m.
